Tourists were willing to share stories of how they survived the night. Some had to climb more than 30 stories to get to their hotel rooms.

The outage plunged Waikiki hotels and businesses into darkness and kept it there well into the morning.

By midmorning, throngs of tourists fled their stuffy rooms in search of hot coffee and tea.
